Starting an Independent PT Business
Leaving a 30% split at a commercial gym to keep 100% of your revenue sounds amazing. But independent training is a business, not just a job.
The Overhead Math
Before you leave, you must calculate your overhead. Use our Pricing Calculator to do this accurately.
- Rent: Independent studios charge either flat monthly rent ($800-$1500) or per-session rent ($15-$30/hour).
- Insurance: You must carry your own professional liability insurance (usually ~$150-$200/year).
- Taxes: As a 1099 contractor, you are responsible for self-employment tax (approx 15.3% in the US) on top of income tax.
When to Make the Jump
Do not quit your commercial gym until you have a signed commitment from enough clients to cover your basic living expenses and your new rent overhead. A common metric is taking 10-15 loyal clients with you (check your non-compete clause carefully).
