NASM CPT Review (2024)
The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) is arguably the most recognized name in personal training. But does the curriculum justify the premium price tag?
The OPT Model
The cornerstone of NASM's curriculum is the Optimum Performance Training (OPT) model. It's a structured approach progressing clients through five phases:
- Stabilization Endurance
- Strength Endurance
- Hypertrophy
- Maximal Strength
- Power
Pros: It provides a clear, foolproof template for new trainers who don't yet know how to periodize a program.
Cons: Critics argue it's overly rigid and places too much emphasis on unstable surface training (like BOSU balls) in the stabilization phase.
NASM at a Glance
- Accreditation: NCCA
- Cost: $899 - $3,299 (depending on package)
- Exam: 120 multiple-choice questions
- Time Limit: 120 minutes
- Passing Score: 70 (scaled)
- 2023 Pass Rate: ~64%
Is NASM Right For You?
If you want to work at a high-end commercial gym (like Equinox or Life Time), NASM is often preferred or explicitly required. If you want to train athletes for powerlifting, look elsewhere (like NSCA).
