ACE CPT Review 2024
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is widely considered the most "generalist" of the big four NCCA-accredited certifications. It's built for trainers who want to work with the general population—people looking to lose weight, move better, and feel healthier, rather than high-performance athletes.
The IFT Model Explained
The core of the ACE curriculum is the Integrated Fitness Training (IFT) model. It divides programming into two distinct tracks:
- Cardiorespiratory Training: Base, Fitness, Performance.
- Muscular Training: Functional, Movement, Load/Speed.
Unlike NASM's rigid OPT model, ACE's IFT model is highly fluid. You can have a client in the "Load" phase for muscular training while keeping them in the "Base" phase for cardio.

Common Mistakes on the Exam
Students frequently fail because they memorize vocabulary without understanding application. For example, knowing what "reciprocal inhibition" means isn't enough; you must know how to identify it during a movement screen and which stretches to prescribe.
Is ACE better than NASM?
Neither is objectively better. ACE is often preferred for general wellness and behavior change coaching, whereas NASM has a stronger reputation for corrective exercise.
